Before we begin here, a PSA:
Usually, on Apartment Eats, I feature recipes for things that go in your mouth. Today, I ask for once that you please do not eat the recipe I’m about to share with you, no matter how delicious it smells. Ingesting essential oils is a great way to make yourself sick, and that’s not fun. ♥

I’m a busy lady. At the end of the day, my gardening, cooking, cleaning, and handiwork take a toll on my little hands. No amount of moisturizing seems to help get rid of my patches of dry skin and rough fingertips. Whether you can relate to having rough hands or you just like to indulge every once in a while, I have a treat for you, and you probably have all the ingredients in your house already! It’s the perfect recipe for an anytime spa treatment, and it costs next to nothing, compared to similar expensive treatments you can find at the store or at the spa. The best part (in my opinion) is that it leaves your hands smelling like a Starbucks!

Not a coffee drinker? Don’t despair! Though this recipe calls for used coffee grounds, you can use fresh ones or even instant coffee and still get the same great results. If you’re grinding your own, use coarser grounds for hands and feet and finer grounds if you intend to use it on your arms and legs. Oh, and, gentlemen! These scrubs aren’t just for ladies. If you’ve been tempted before but shirked away from the rose petal and apricot scented scrubs and spa treatments at the grocery store, this scrub is 100% man-worthy (though, to be fair, so is the rose petal and apricot one, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise). The coarseness of the coffee and the delightfully heady aroma of a fresh cuppa make for a perfect way to relax (even in secret) after or during a long day at work. It can be our little secret.

So brew yourself a cuppa joe and enjoy! Whether you keep a personal pot of body scrub by the sink or you break out a whole bowl for a spa day with friends, this little treat is the perfect way to pamper yourself on a budget!

Ingredients
8  rounded tbsp Used coffee grounds
4 tbsp Unsweetened cocoa powder
4 tbsp Coconut oil (softened but not melted)
1 tbsp Honey
2 drops Peppermint oil

Mix together the coffee grounds and cocoa in a bowl, then add the coconut oil and honey and mix until you have a paste. Add your peppermint oil and stir again. Apply the mask to your hands, feet, legs, or anywhere else you want to feel silky and smooth. Massage the scrub into your skin for 2-3 minutes before rinsing off with warm water. Pat your skin dry and feel the smoothness.

The coffee acts as an exfoliator, removing dead skin cells just like a salt or a sugar scrub would. The cocoa powder contains antioxidants that help rejuvenate your skin, especially after being out in the sun. The coconut oil acts as a moisturizer along with the honey, which also serves as an antiseptic, cleaning out those pores you’ve just opened up with the coffee grounds. The peppermint oil is invigorating and it has a cooling effect on the skin (which is why you only want a couple of drops).

If you love how it feels on your hands and feet, try making it with very finely ground coffee for a face-friendly version! Everything else is the same, except when you apply it, be gentle, rub in small, circular motions, let it sit for a few minutes, and then rinse it off gently with warm water and a washcloth. Make with fresh coffee grounds for a bit of extra caffeine to help perk up your skin and soothe inflammation.
