Red Wine Hot Chocolate
Last winter, people got really excited about red wine hot chocolate. I thought it sounded kind of dumb, so I let it be. Well, here I am, months later, faced with a chocolate craving and a remaining third of a bottle of merlot. So I said, screw it, let’s try it.
I’m going to come right out and say that it’s not great. It’s not even good, really. It’s passable at best, but this was an experiment, and I thought I’d share it, in case anyone else was curious. Again, this is not a recipe I’d usually pass on to my friends, but in the interest of curiosity and food experimentation, I’m here to report on what I found. As a public service announcement, I’d also like to advise other intrepid fad-foodies to please not waste a good bottle of merlot on this. For the sake of the wine, just use leftovers or some bottom shelfer (or be me, and use both — leftover bottom shelf wine).
Anyway, here’s the accident-flavored disaster I decided to try that *did* curb my chocolate craving, though mostly out of disgust.
1 cup Milk
1 1/2 tbsp Cocoa powder
1/2 tsp Cinnamon
1/4 tsp Vanilla extract
2 tbsp Sugar
1/2 cup Merlot
In a small saucepan, heat up the milk and whisk in everything but the wine. Once the mixture is warm, remove it from the heat and add in the merlot. Give it a little stir and then pour it straight into the trash. Just throw it out. Or pour it into a mug and try it. I won’t stop you.
